4th of July

Yesterday was the 4th.  A day sure to bring to mind American flags, parades, grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, and of course fireworks.  I do love the 4th; however, yesterday was the most un-fourth-of-July-ish I've ever felt on the actual holiday.  I don't know why, but it just didn't seem like Independence Day.

We began the day with just Eric, Brooke and me.  Isaac spent the night with Grandma last night.  We had breakfast and played with Brookie before packing up around 11:00 a.m. to pick Issac up.  We had plans to take him to the park. The rain finally stopped, so we thought we should jump on that while we could.  We got to Grandma's just as they were coming out onto the porch.  I hugged Issac and told him that we were going to the park!

He said, "NO park."
I asked him, "Do you want to go to the park?"
He said, "No."
I asked, "Where do you want to go?"
He replied, "Ma-ees" (Which means Aunt Mary's House)

So instead of going to run and jump and play and all that, he wanted to walk to Aunt Mary's house, which is across the street from Grandma's.  Sigh.  Okay then.

Flash forward to that night.  Eric was gone, Brooke was asleep, and it was just me and my boy.  He didn't want a bath despite the fact that his feet were filthy.  He did, however, love the idea of being washed off with the shower hose (a.k.a the detachable shower head).  After the shower, I began to dry him off when he heard fireworks going off thanks to the people on our street and the sound overflow from the IMS, where the Rolling Stones were playing.

Isaac put both hands over his eyes and said, "No Mommy."  He was also tiptoeing around the house due to the noise.  He was afraid of it all.  In response to the noise, we snuggled in "Mommy-Daddy Bed" as he calls it and watched Curious George.  I turned up the volume so he wouldn't hear the noises outside.  He watched that cute little monkey and then fell asleep next to me.  That boy is just too much!

This was the first time I ever remember not watching the fireworks, which made the day feel even more un-fourth-like.  Oh well, cuddling with my sweet boy is better than any firework show!

Today, we went to church and then to Grandma's house for a late 4th of July lunch.  After lunch, we went to Nanner and Big Guy's house to swim.  Isaac loves the water but is still somewhat hesitant about it.  As expected, he is fearful of water getting into his nose and mouth (who wouldn't be!) And, up until today, he hasn't even enjoyed going too far out into the middle of the pool when held by someone else.  Today was a different story.  Nanner bought a new swim "outfit" where the floaties and attached to a foam flotation centered on the chest.  It helped bunches in keeping his face out of the water and he loved it!  He even treaded water next to Nanner or Daddy without needing to be held.  He had a great swimming afternoon.
